What is boiler scale? 【Basic Knowledge】

That trouble might be caused by the scale? Here's how to identify it!

■What is scale? Scale refers to the deposits formed by minerals such as calcium and magnesium contained in water, which crystallize and accumulate on the surfaces of equipment. ■Problems caused by scale! It can lead to various issues such as reduced heat transfer efficiency, sticking of valves, and holes in heat transfer surfaces due to overheating. ■Is it actually difficult to identify? Scale has characteristics that make it difficult to pinpoint the cause, as it shares similarities with problems caused by rust. To definitively identify scale, open inspections of piping and component analysis are necessary. ■Please consult us first! Feel free to reach out to us regarding scale diagnosis through open inspections and component analysis.

How much does boiler scale of 1mm worsen fuel efficiency? [Basic Knowledge]

Is it the same mechanism as limescale? The reason why scale buildup reduces boiler efficiency.

■What is scale? Scale refers to the minerals such as magnesium, calcium, and silica that precipitate from water. A common example is the limescale that accumulates in kettles and electric pots. ■What happens when scale accumulates? When scale accumulates on the interior surface of a boiler, it reduces thermal efficiency and can lead to serious problems such as valve sticking, operational issues, and water leaks due to cracks, which in the worst case can cause the boiler to stop functioning. This is similar to how using a kettle continuously requires extra energy to reach boiling. ■How much does the thickness of scale affect performance? It is said that scale can cause a deterioration in fuel efficiency of about 1-3% for every 1mm of thickness, which means that for a monthly fuel cost of 1 million yen, it could result in an annual loss of about 360,000 yen. In one factory case, it was confirmed that after chemical treatment, the exhaust gas temperature decreased by about 15°C compared to conventional chemical treatments.
